DOMAIN POINTERS

Domain pointers allow you to have another domain name pointing to a subdirectory of your main web hosting account. People choose this option because it is cheaper than having a seperate hosting account for each domain name.

Before signing up for domain pointers you should be aware of the following limitations of this system:

  1. You will only have e-mail addresses at your primary domain, not the parked ones.
  2. You will not get seperate control panels for each domain.
  3. Frontpage extensions will only work for the main domain, not the additional ones.
  4. You will not get seperate Mysql databases or FTP accounts for each domain unless you have a plan which includes them.
  5. You are not permitted to resell accounts using domain pointers to third parties. You should look at our reseller plans if you wish to do this.
  6. You can only have domain pointers on accounts that have a unique IP address.

If any of these issues are likely to cause you a problem then please sign up for seperate hosting accounts for each domain.

Setting up domain pointers

To point a domain to a subdirectory requires four steps.
Three of these are your responsibility and must be completed *before* you contact support.

As an example we will use the domain ecalpemos.com but the same procedures apply to any domain you wish to point to a subdirectory.

  1. Set up a directory in the "public_html" folder of your hosting account called "ecalpemos" (this will appear in your browser as yourdomain.com/ecalpemos).
  2. Use the control panel to set up the subdomain ecalpemos.yourdomain.com. (this will take its content from the directory you created in step 1)
  3. Contact your domain registrar and have the name servers listed for the domain ecalpemos.com changed to: ns.srv2.com ns2.srv2.com (This is essential as without these changes the domain pointer will not work)
  4. Contact support and ask for the domain ecalpemos.com to be parked on top of the subdomain ecalpemos.yourdomain.com

Once your domain registrar has made the changes to your domain record you will need to wait up to 72 hours for the changes to take effect. Once the process is complete you will be able to go to http://www.ecalpemos.com/ and see the index file which you uploaded to the subdirectory /ecalpemos in your hosting account.
